Facebook Restrictions on Personal Data Access

  • What is Cambridge Analytica?
    • According to Wikipedia:
      • “British political consulting firm which combines data mining, data brokerage and data analysis with strategic communication for the electoral process.
      • 2014 – CEO of Cambridge Analytica, Alexander Nix, claimed the company was involved in 44 US politcal races
      • 2015 – Data analysis for Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign
      • 2016 – worked on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign
      • 2016 – Leave.EU campaign
  • What Happened
    • 3.17.2018 news broke in the Observer and The New York Times that Aleksander Kogan, an academic at Cambridge made an app called “thisisyourdigitallife” which The New York Times article says “harvested private information from the Facebook profiles of more than 50 million users without their permission…making it one f the largest data leaks in the social network’s history. The breach allowed the company to exploit the private social media activity of a huge swath of the American electorate, developing techniques that underpinned its work on Presiden Trupm’s campaign in 2016.” The app claimed to be compiling the data for academic purposes.
    • 3.17.2018 Facebook issued a news release titled “Suspending Cambridge Analytica and SCL Group from Facebook” written by Paul Grewal, VP and deputy general counsel at Facebook. He wrote:
      • There was no data breach
      • Kogan
        • “requested and gained access to information from users who chose to sign up to his app, and everyone involved gave their consent. People knowingly provided their information, no systems were infiltrated, and no passwords or sensitive pieces of information were stolen or hacked.”
        • “…violated [Facebook’s] Platform Policies by passing data from an app that was using Facebook Login to SCL/Cambridge Analytica, a firm that does political, government and military work around the globe.”
        • claimed the “thisisyourdigitallife” app was a research app developed by a psychologist that offered a personality prediction
          • 270k people downloaded the app and gave consent for Kogan to access
            • The city set on their profile
            • Content they liked
            • Information about friends with privacy settings that would allow it
      • Facebook
        • Learned of his policy violation in 2015
        • Removed his app from Facebook
        • Demanded certifications from all parties that the data was deleted
        • Recently became aware of claims the data hasn’t been deleted
        • Is working to determine the accuracy of those claims
        • Over the past 5 years has worked to improve their “ability to detect and prevent violations by app developers.”
