Informed by the Facebook News Release published 10/27/2017 titled “Update on Our Advertising Transparency and Authenticity Efforts” written by Rob Goldman, VP of ads

  • What’s the article about? 
    • Starting November, people will be able to click “View Ads” on a page and view ads a page is running on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger
    • The person does not have to be part of the target audience for the ad
  • Why are they doing this?
    • To help protect the integrity of elections in the U.S. and around the world
    • Because people should be able to tell who the advertiser is and see the ads they’re running
  • What all steps are they taking??
    • See the full Facebook post from Mark Zuckerberg posted September 21, 2017 for initial steps taken
      1. Actively working with the U.S. government on Russian interference investigations
      2. Continued investigation on what happened on Facebook in the election
      3. Make political advertising more transparent
        1. Disclose which page paid for an ad
        2. See ads they’re currently running to any audience on Facebook
      4. Strengthen political ad review process
      5. Double the team working on election integrity
      6. Expand partnerships with election commissions
      7. Increase sharing of threat information with other tech and security companies

      • Facebook
      • Instagram
      • Messenger
    • Ads must be associated with a page as part of the ad creation process
    • Test begins in Canada
    • Rolls out to the U.S. this summer prior to the U.S. Midterm elections in November
    • Broadly rolls out to all other countries around the same time

      • The ad in a searchable archive that covers a 4-year rolling period
