5 Steps to Create Next Year’s Strategy – In a Hurry

  1. Research
    1. Read the latest corporate strategy documents.
    2. Read the latest department strategy documents.
    3. Pull up last year’s strategy of record.
    4. Check your monthly reporting for objectives not yet met (see Episode 23 – Reporting on Special Ops)
    5. Highlight any opportunity areas; including
      1. Extension of existing goals not yet achieved
      2. Expansion of existing goals to grow beyond current achievements
      3. Creation of new goals tackle new opportunities
  2. Map the Plan
    1. Jot down all of the opportunity areas captured in research.
    2. Brainstorm possible goals for each opportunity area
    3. Refer back to corporate and departmental strategy documents
    4. Circle the opportunities that fall within those parameters
  3. Draw the Plan
    1. Draft goals document using the “what to where by when” logic
    2. Cite specific and measurable targets you will hit using the SMART goal method.
  4. Review the Plan
    1. Review the plan with your direct reports as appropriate
    2. Review the plan with your leadership
    3. Make any necessary corrections/revisions
  5. Implement
    1. Move quickly
    2. Make your team aware of the plan
